MYTHS ABOUT SINGING #1
The larger vocal range, the better vocalist – MYTH!
I am convinced that you’ve heard 1000 times that you should have at least 3 musical octaves to be a good singer. Fortunately, it is a complete nonsense for the number of octaves we are able to sing doesn’t mean that we are great singers. Of course, it is nice to have a very large vocal range but it doesn’t matter in the case when someone has a bad vocal technique, a laryngospasm (that is the uncontrolled muscular contraction of the vocal cords), or simply strain his voice. The truth is that vocalists usually are singing in two octaves and that’s all (I am talking all the time about pop and rock vocalists, not about opera singers). What matters is how they sing, not how many octaves they have. Remember, it's how you use the vocal range, not what is the vocal range!
I hope that you understand now that to be a great singer you don’t have to have many octaves.
Quality, not quantity!
