15 music terms you should know!
To be a good singer you do not have to know notes and every music term, BUT... If you want to be an aware singer, you should know at least the most relevant terms! - Why? Well, knowing them enables a better understanding of the song, it is also useful when you want to communicate with musicians how your song should sound, etc.
Here’s 15 music
terms which you should know!
- Rhythm – a strong, regular repeated pattern of
sound.
- Time signature (meter signature) – 2 number
symbols, like for example ¾, used at the beginning of sheet music (or
through sheet music) which specifies how many beats are contained in each
musical bar and how is the value of musical notes that each beat receives.
- Accompaniment – the musical (an instrumental or
vocal) part that supports the melody
- Tempo – the speed of a song.
- Vibrato – a regular, pulsating change of pitch
(an effect where the pitch of a notes waves).
- Legato – the notes are connected in a very smooth way (without much articulation between notes).
- Glissando – to slide in pitch from note to note
(a rapid sliding up or down).
- Piano – playing or singing quietly or softly.
- Forte – playing or singing loud (louder dynamics).
- Crescendo – a gradual increase in dynamic volume during a section of music.
- Acapella – singing without the accompaniment.
- Falsetto – artificially high-pitched the vocal register.
- Appoggio – (in a nutshell) – vocal support - the sound is supported by the air.
- Dynamics – means how quietly or loudly a song
should be played.
- Key – a system of notes which form the harmonic
foundation of a song.
